COUNCIL REPRESENTATION

Members of the Council introduced themselves. Satoru Ozeki, MD of Japan is a new representative (term 2006-2009) of the Asian Federation . It was reported that the Asian Federation will meet for the first time this year and that Singapore will start a foot and ankle society in November. The South American Federation now includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Costa Rica, and the Brazilian Society is the largest society. South Africa is included in the European Federation, and Australia is included in the North American Federation. It was noted that the British Society has changed its name to the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS).

MINUTES

The minutes of the last Council meeting held Sept. 14, 2006 in Prague, Czech Republic, were presented by Dr. Giannini. No action was taken. (Secretariat note: The fund balance at that time was $23,580.88, rather than $29,000 as recorded in the minutes).

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

Dr. Giannini reviewed the Council meeting held September 14, 2006 in Prague. He presented the Council's proposal that the "Takakura Award," which is given at the triennial meeting for the best clinical study, be rotated and named for the immediate past president, thus changing the award for the 2008 meeting to the "Coughlin Award." The Council also proposed that the second award, now called the "President's Award," which is given for the best scientific study, be named for the current president, thus changing the award for the 2008 meeting to the "Giannini Award." Each award is $5,000 USD, and the awards are funded by Integra-NewDeal. Dr. Kinoshita expressed concern about the proposal to change the name of the "Takakura Award." Since no decision was made by the Council, the "Takakura Award" will remain in honour of Prof. Takakura. The "President's Award" will take the name of the President serving during the term.

REPORT OF THE TREASURER

Judy Baumhauer, MD, Treasurer, reported a current balance of $23,520.98. All dues for 2005 have been paid. Dues invoices for 2006 for $3,000 USD will be sent to one representative of each Federation, and payments should be sent to the IFFAS Secretariat. Funds will be moved to a bank in the Chicago area in the near future.

REPORT OF THE SECRETARIAT

Ms. Lousanne Lofgren, Secretariat, provided a written report of current activities related to the update of information on the Web site. The organizational information has been updated, including the list and contact information for Council members, a brief report on the 2005 meeting in Naples, links to national societies, and a listing and links to upcoming meetings. In order to make the IFFAS site a resource for orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons around the world, all Council members were requested to ask the organizers of local and national meetings, instructional courses, and continental meetings to forward information on future meetings to the Secretariat. Information should include the full name of the meeting, full name of the sponsoring organization, dates of the meeting, city, country, hotel information, Web site and/or e-mail address for further information.

UPDATE ON THE 2008 TRIENNIAL MEETING

The third IFFAS Triennial Scientific Meeting will be held September 18-20, 2008 in Bahia, Brazil. Dr. Joao de Carvalho Neto, Treasurer of the Brazilian Foot & Ankle Society, provided an update on plans for the meeting, which will be chaired by Dr. Osny Salomao. The main themes for the scientific meeting have been selected, and all information will be posted on the meeting Web site www.iffas2008.com.br after April 15, 2007. Promotional information and photos will be put on the IFFAS Web site with a link to the meeting Web site for specific information. Dr. Carvalho Neto inquired about obtaining advance funding from IFFAS for meeting expenses that must be paid prior to the meeting. While the Council was supportive of the financial concerns, the costs of hosting and planning the IFFAS triennial meeting are the responsibility of the host federation, which also is the benefactor of net income from the meeting. Council members were asked to announce the meeting at all opportunities. The IFFAS meeting will be announced at the AOFAS 2007 Annual Summer Meeting in Toronto and the 2008 Specialty Day meeting in San Francisco.

Dr. Calvalho Neto was encouraged to contact international sales representatives of orthopaedic companies regarding sponsorship funding for the meeting, and he asked Council members to facilitate introductions.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:05 pm PT.
Respectfully submitted,

Lousanne Lofgren, CAE
